Emma’s Journey to Overcoming Anxiety

Anxious girl standing with her back facing the reader. Girl is anxious but later feels better.Individual psychotherapy for anxiety and emotional regulation. 1:1 therapy for teenagers and adults in Stavanger, Norway, offering multilingual counselling

Emma (name changed for confidentiality) was once vibrant and ambitious, but recently, anxiety had taken over her life. What started as a fluttering in her chest quickly escalated into full-blown panic attacks, making everyday tasks overwhelming. Her heart raced, her palms were sweaty, and she struggled to focus beyond her constant worry.

Feeling trapped in this cycle, Emma sought help and came to my practice. In our sessions, we explored her symptoms—tightness in her chest, dizziness, and a persistent sense of dread. We tackled her anxiety using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), focusing on identifying and challenging her negative thoughts. This approach helped her reframe her thinking and regain a sense of control.

We also incorporated Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) techniques, such as mindfulness exercises, to help Emma stay grounded. By practicing these skills, she learned to manage her anxiety more effectively and remain present, rather than being overwhelmed by her fears.

As time went on, Emma noticed significant improvements. Her racing heart and dizziness became less frequent, and she felt more confident in her daily life. With the tools and techniques we developed together, Emma successfully reduced her anxiety and reclaimed her sense of well-being.

Emma’s story is one of resilience and growth. Through our therapy sessions, she learned to navigate her anxiety and apply the skills we developed together, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Her journey highlights how evidence-based techniques can transform mental health challenges into opportunities for personal growth.

"Trauma is something that happens to you that makes you so upset that it overwhelms you. Trauma is not the event that happens but it is how you respond to it."
